Kasbah Boulaouane
2019
El Jadida, Morocco
Kasbah Boulaouane is reimagined as an accessible cultural destination where contemporary corten, glass, and metal interventions are lightly inserted within the historic stone fortress to support its new roles as a retreat center, a concert venue with integrated seating, a touristic walking circuit with a gift shop, and a rest stop for hikers. The project introduces elevated, reversible pathways that guide visitors through the kasbah without disturbing the archaeological ground, while new corten structures frame entrances, define gathering spaces, and create shaded halts along the route. Transparent glass volumes house programmatic elements such as the gift shop and retreat rooms, offering framed views of the river and desert landscape, while the concert area is shaped through subtle terracing and metal edges that respect the existing topography. Throughout the site, the warm tones of corten and the lightness of metal and glass create a deliberate contrast with the kasbah’s earth and stone, allowing the new architecture to remain clearly contemporary yet deeply respectful of the historic fabric.
